Remodeling in Reading, MA

Reading shares a border with Wakefield, so for us it's a short trip down the road, not a service call from far away. We can usually come out for an estimate at a time that works around your day, and once the job starts the crew isn't burning half the morning in traffic. If something needs a second look after we finish, that's an easy stop, not a special trip.

In Reading, most of what we're asked about is inside single-family homes: a kitchen that no longer fits how the family uses it, a bathroom that has been patched for twenty years, rooms and stairwells that need a real paint job instead of another quick coat. We do kitchens, bathrooms, interior and exterior painting, drywall and plaster, and we tell you up front what's worth spending on and what isn't.

A town of single-family homes, some of them very old

Reading leans heavily single-family. A 2022 housing comparison in Wakefield's Housing Production Plan puts roughly three quarters of Reading's homes in single-family buildings, well above Wakefield, Stoneham or Melrose. That shapes the work: most projects are owner-occupied houses where the family stays put during the remodel, and the goal is a kitchen or bath that will last as long as they plan to stay.

Reading also has genuinely old houses. Parker Tavern, built in 1694, is the town's oldest surviving building, and the Common and Woburn Street areas are listed as historic districts. In older homes like these, walls and floors are rarely square or level. Cabinets, tile and trim have to be scribed and shimmed to look straight, and that fitting time belongs in the written estimate, not in a surprise bill later.

Permits in Reading

Reading's building permits come from the town Building Department at 16 Lowell Street. The town notes that a building permit must be picked up before an inspection can be scheduled, and that electrical and plumbing permits must be issued before their inspections. Those trade permits are pulled by the licensed electricians and plumbers doing the work. We explain what your project needs at the estimate, and we build the permit timing into the schedule.

Reviews From Our Satisfied Clients

Marcio scheduled a visit to my home and we went through the renovation I was looking to have done in our master bathroom. After providing us the final estimate we scheduled demo and his team arrived promptly to start their work. They did a good job covering the bedroom items to avoid dust which helped quite a bit. During construction Marcio kept me informed the entire time and we made a couple minor changes to the scope of work without any issues… Overall, Marcio was a great contractor to work with at a good price.

Marcio was WONDERFUL! He guided us through the process of choosing the best paint option for our fence. There was open communication throughout the process and flexibility in scheduling. Our end result is just as we were hoping for, a power washed and beautifully painted black fence… We will be reaching out to Marcio for all future house projects!

Excellent work installing my kitchen backsplash. Good attention to detail. They covered my floors for protection and thoroughly cleaned up when done. I will also have him do my 1/2 bath as well.

The drywall work they did in our living room was flawless. The walls are smooth, and they even helped us with some minor repairs we hadn’t noticed before. Great service and very affordable.

Questions from Reading homeowners

Yes. Reading borders Wakefield, so it's one of the closest towns we work in, about ten minutes from our base. We come to the house, measure, look at what's behind the problem and give you a written price and schedule. Call (781) 866-1835 or use the appointment form to set up a free estimate.

It can if nobody plans for it. The Building Department's posted hours run Monday through Thursday, and a permit has to be picked up before an inspection can be booked. We sequence the work so inspections land on days the office is open and the crew isn't standing around waiting on a signature.

Often, yes, but first we find out whether the wall carries load and what runs through it. A bearing wall needs a properly sized beam and a building permit, and any wiring or plumbing inside it is moved by licensed trades. We'll tell you at the estimate whether opening it is worth the cost or whether a wider doorway gets you most of the benefit.

Usually the prep is the big job. Scraping, sanding, repairing soft trim and priming bare wood take longer than the finish coats. If the house was built before 1978, lead-safe practices apply when old paint is disturbed. We look at the siding and trim closely at the estimate so the price reflects the real prep, not a guess.
