A countertop is only as flat as what's under it

Stone counters are heavy and rigid. They don't flex to match a cabinet that's out of level, they crack. So a good countertop install starts before the stone shows up: checking that the base cabinets are level, tied together and strong enough to carry the slab, with support where an overhang or a dishwasher opening needs it.

Then comes the template. The fabricator measures off your actual cabinets and walls, and that template decides where the seams fall, how the sink is cut and how the edge meets an out-of-square wall. We go over those decisions with you before anything is cut, because once stone is cut there's no undo.

We've been doing kitchen work in Wakefield, Stoneham, Woburn and the surrounding towns since 2008. You get the price and the schedule in writing before the project starts, we help you compare slabs, edges and sinks as part of the design guidance, and if you change your mind about an edge profile or a sink mid-project, the cost is priced before anything is cut.

What's included

Cabinet check before template

Base cabinets confirmed level and secured, with added supports for long overhangs, peninsulas and open spans like a dishwasher opening.

Template and seam layout

Seam locations, overhangs, edge profile and sink style decided with you before the fabricator cuts anything.

Sink and cooktop cut-outs

Undermount sinks set with clips and adhesive, with cut-outs matched to the exact sink and cooktop models you've chosen.

Old counters removed

Laminate or old stone taken out with care, so the cabinets you're keeping aren't damaged.

Coordinated hookups

A licensed plumber reconnects the sink, faucet and disposal after the counter is set, and we schedule it so you're not waiting days for water.

Buyer's Guide

Quartz, granite or butcher block: what each one is good at

Quartz is an engineered stone, mostly ground quartz bound with resin. It doesn't need sealing, the color is consistent from slab to slab, and it shrugs off most stains. Its weak point is heat: a hot pan set straight down can discolor or crack the resin, so trivets are a habit you'll need. Because the pattern is uniform, seams in quartz tend to be easier to hide than in heavily veined stone.

Granite is natural stone, so every slab is different and you should pick yours in person. It handles heat better than quartz. Most granite should be sealed, and some lighter, more porous colors need it more often than darker, denser ones. With strong veining or movement, seams are harder to match, so seam placement matters even more. Ask to see where the seam would fall on the actual slab.

Butcher block is warm, quiet and easy to repair with sanding, but it needs oiling and it does not like standing water, so it's a poor choice right around a sink unless it's sealed for it. Many people use it on an island and stone on the perimeter. If your existing granite is in good shape and you're only changing cabinet color, keeping it can save real money.

Where the seams go, and why you should care

Most kitchens with an L or U layout need at least one seam, because slabs come in fixed sizes. A seam over a dishwasher, at the narrow strip in front of a sink, or across a busy prep area is a weak spot. A seam at a corner or running into a wall is usually the better place.

We look at seam placement with you at the template stage and talk through the trade-offs, so nothing about the finished counter surprises you on install day.

Countertops: Frequently Asked Questions

Because the fabricator templates from the real cabinets, not from a drawing. Walls in older houses are rarely straight, and the template captures every bow and out-of-square corner so the stone fits tight. Templating before the cabinets are set and fastened is how counters end up with gaps along the wall.

That depends on the fabricator's schedule and whether your slab is in stock, so it can range from several days to a couple of weeks. We plan the rest of the kitchen around that gap and give you the expected install date in writing once the template is done.

It's not a good idea. Quartz is bound with resin, and direct high heat can scorch or discolor it, or crack it near a seam or cut-out. Granite handles heat better, but sudden heat on a cold slab is still not ideal. Keep trivets near the range whichever stone you choose.

Short overhangs, around the edge of a counter, typically need no extra support. Seating overhangs at an island or peninsula usually do, and the safe limit depends on the stone type and thickness. We add brackets or a hidden steel support where the fabricator's guidelines call for it, so the overhang is solid when someone leans on it.

Not always, but it is the easiest time to do it. If you're going from a drop-in sink in laminate to stone, an undermount sink usually looks and cleans better, and it has to be chosen before the template so the cut-out matches. Reusing an old drop-in sink in new stone is possible but limits your options.
