A room you can live in again by the end of the week

Most people put off painting a room because of the disruption, not the cost. Furniture in the hallway, dust on everything, a crew that disappears for two days in the middle. We plan the job so that doesn't happen: what moves, what gets covered, which rooms you lose and for how long.

The great room in these photos is a good example. Floors went under protection before anything was opened, walls were patched and sanded, and the sage green went on over a properly prepared surface. The trim got its own coat in white so the edges read sharp against the color.

We work across Wakefield, Reading, Stoneham, Melrose and the towns around them, in everything from 1920s colonials with plaster walls to newer homes with flat drywall. The prep is different in each, and we'll tell you at the estimate what your walls need before they get paint.

What an interior paint job includes

Moving and covering

Furniture moved to the middle or out of the room and covered, floors and stairs protected, switch plates and fixtures removed or masked.

Wall repair before paint

Nail holes, dents, cracks and nail pops filled and sanded flat. Small drywall repairs are part of the prep, not a separate trip.

Caulk and spot priming

Gaps where trim meets the wall are caulked, and patches are spot primed so they don't show up as dull spots under the finish coat.

Ceilings and walls

Ceilings first, then walls, with cut lines done by hand at the ceiling and along trim.

Trim, doors and stairwells

Baseboards, casings, doors, railings and tall stairwells, usually in a harder-wearing sheen than the walls.

Cleanup and walkthrough

Protection pulled, furniture put back, and a walk through the room with you to catch anything before we pack up.

Buyer's Guide

Picking sheen, primer and how far to go

Sheen matters more than most people expect. Flat or matte hides wall flaws best and is the usual choice for ceilings and bedrooms, but it marks more easily. Eggshell is the common middle ground for living rooms and halls. Satin stands up to wiping in kitchens, bathrooms and kids' rooms. Semi-gloss is for trim and doors. The shinier the paint, the more every patch and seam shows, so glossy walls need better prep underneath.

Primer is not always needed over every wall. Repainting a sound wall in a similar color usually needs only spot priming on repairs. You do want a full primer coat over new drywall or skim coat, over water or smoke stains (a stain-blocking primer), over glossy oil-based trim before switching to latex, and when going from a dark color to a much lighter one. We'll tell you which applies so you're not paying for a coat you don't need.

If your walls are sound and the color is just tired, painting the walls and leaving the trim alone is a reasonable way to keep the cost down. If the trim is chipped or yellowed old oil paint, it will make fresh walls look worse, and it's worth doing both. In homes built before 1978, sanding or scraping old trim paint can disturb lead, so ask us at the estimate how those surfaces will be handled.

Living in the house while we paint

We usually work room by room so the rest of the house stays usable. You'll know the order up front, which rooms are off limits each day, and when the paint is dry enough to put things back.

Latex paint is dry to the touch within hours but takes weeks to fully cure. Go easy on scrubbing and leaning furniture against fresh walls for the first couple of weeks.

Interior Painting: Frequently Asked Questions

Satin or a paint labeled for bathrooms is the usual choice, because it tolerates moisture and wiping better than flat. Good ventilation matters as much as the paint. If an existing bathroom wall is peeling, the old paint and any mildew have to be dealt with first, or new paint will peel the same way. We'll look at the room and tell you which it needs.

No. Clear off small items, wall hangings and anything fragile, and we'll handle moving the furniture to the center or out of the way and covering it. Big pieces like pianos or full bookcases are easier to work around than move, so mention them at the estimate and we'll plan for them.

Sometimes, but we usually don't recommend it. Paint can loosen the paper and the seams often show through. Removing it, repairing the wall underneath and priming before paint gives a better result. If the paper is tightly bonded and removal would damage old plaster, sealing and painting over it can be the lesser evil, and we'll explain the trade-off.

Yes. Ceilings yellow and get stained on their own schedule. We use a flat ceiling paint, which hides roller marks and minor flaws, and cut in carefully at the top of the wall. If there's a water stain, it gets a stain-blocking primer first, or it will bleed back through the new paint.

Most interior prep is light hand sanding of filler, not heavy sanding of the whole wall. We cover floors and furniture, sand only what needs it, and clean up as we go. In pre-1978 homes, sanding painted surfaces can create lead dust, which is why that work follows lead-safe practices.

Marcio scheduled a visit to my home and we went through the renovation I was looking to have done in our master bathroom. After providing us the final estimate we scheduled demo and his team arrived promptly to start their work. They did a good job covering the bedroom items to avoid dust which helped quite a bit. During construction Marcio kept me informed the entire time and we made a couple minor changes to the scope of work without any issues… Overall, Marcio was a great contractor to work with at a good price.
