The part of a shower you'll never see does the most work
Tile and grout are not waterproof. Water passes through grout every time you shower, and what stops it from reaching the studs and the ceiling below is the layer behind the tile. A walk-in shower that leaks usually looked fine on day one. The failure was in the membrane, the drain connection or the slope of the floor.
So we build showers from the drain up: a floor sloped toward the drain, a waterproof membrane that runs continuously across the floor and up the walls, sealed at every seam, corner, niche and pipe, then tile. Large-format porcelain, stone subway, pebble floors and glass mosaic bands all sit on that same foundation.
The walk-in showers in the photos here are bathrooms our crew built, including the grey porcelain shower with the mosaic band, pebble floor and matte black fixtures, and the stone tile shower tucked under a sloped attic ceiling. You get a written price and schedule before demo, and if you change a tile or add a niche partway through, the cost is priced before the work happens.
What goes into a walk-in shower
Demo down to the studs
Old tile, backer and any wet or rotted framing removed, so the new shower starts on solid, dry structure.
Sloped shower floor
The pan is pitched toward the drain, roughly a quarter inch per foot, so water doesn't sit in corners.
Continuous waterproofing
A sheet or liquid-applied membrane over the backer on walls and floor, with seams, corners and penetrations sealed and tied into the drain.
Niches and benches
Recessed niches framed between studs and waterproofed like the walls, with the shelf pitched slightly so it drains.
Tile set flat and true
Large-format wall tile, pebble or mosaic floors and accent bands laid out so cuts are balanced and lines stay level.
Glass measured after tile
Frameless doors and panels are measured once the tile is set, so the glass fits the finished opening.
Curbed, low-curb or curbless, and what each one takes
A curbed shower has a raised threshold at the entry, usually a few inches high, that keeps water in. It's the simplest to build in most homes because the shower floor can sit on top of the existing subfloor, and it's the most forgiving if the glass doesn't run all the way across. For most bathroom remodels around Wakefield, a well-built curbed shower is the practical choice.
A curbless or zero-threshold shower has no step at all, which is easier for aging in place and looks clean. To get the slope to the drain without a curb, the shower floor has to be lower than the bathroom floor, which often means recessing the subfloor or altering the floor framing. Any change to joists is structural work, so ask whoever builds it how they'll do it and whether it needs a permit.
A linear drain along the back wall lets the floor slope in one direction, which suits large-format floor tile. A center drain needs the floor sloped from four sides, which works better with small tile or pebbles that can follow the slope. If your existing shower is solid and only the grout looks tired, regrouting and resealing may be all it needs.

Your shower valve and drain, handled by licensed plumbers
Converting a tub to a walk-in shower, moving the drain or adding a handheld and rain head all change the plumbing. In Massachusetts that work and its permit belong to a licensed plumber, and we coordinate them so the valve and drain are in place before the waterproofing goes on.
You deal with one contractor and one schedule, and you get a written price for the whole shower before demo starts.

Walk-In Showers: Frequently Asked Questions
A continuous waterproof membrane behind the tile, tied into the drain, with every seam, inside corner, niche and pipe sealed. With many methods the pan can be flood tested before tile goes down, so a leak shows up while it's still easy to fix, not after the ceiling below gets stained.
Some showers work with a single fixed glass panel and no door, as long as the shower is long enough and the shower head points away from the opening. In smaller bathrooms an open shower usually means water on the floor. We look at the size of your space and where the controls go before recommending one.
Smaller tile, like pebbles, mosaics or 2-inch squares, follows the slope of the floor and gives more grout lines for grip. Larger tile can work with a linear drain because the floor only slopes one way. Whatever you choose, it should be rated for wet floors so it isn't slippery when wet.
Usually, yes. One of the showers on this page sits under an attic roofline. The keys are enough headroom where you stand, a shower head placed for the ceiling height, and a fan that can clear the steam in a tight space. We measure all of that at the estimate before promising a layout.
Grout and the setting materials need time to cure before heavy water use, and the glass is usually installed after tile, which can add some days while it's made. The exact wait depends on the products used. We give you a date for the first shower in your written schedule.

Reviews From Our Satisfied Clients
Marcio scheduled a visit to my home and we went through the renovation I was looking to have done in our master bathroom. After providing us the final estimate we scheduled demo and his team arrived promptly to start their work. They did a good job covering the bedroom items to avoid dust which helped quite a bit. During construction Marcio kept me informed the entire time and we made a couple minor changes to the scope of work without any issues… Overall, Marcio was a great contractor to work with at a good price.
