A good patch disappears. A bad one shows from across the room.

Most drywall damage is small: a doorknob through the wall, a cracked seam above a doorway, screws popping in a ceiling, a square hole where a plumber went in after a leak. The patch itself is quick. Making it invisible is the skill, because a raised edge or a dull spot under the paint catches the light every time you walk past.

One of our customers had us smooth out a living room's drywall and take care of a handful of small repairs around the house while we were there. That is a common way to do it: gather the patches into one visit instead of living with them one at a time.

We repair drywall in homes across Wakefield, Reading, Melrose, Stoneham and Woburn, and because we paint too, the repair is finished in color, not left as a white square of primer on your wall. Floors get covered, dust is kept to the work area, and you'll know the price before we start.

Repairs we handle

Small holes and dents

Anchors, nails, dings and dents filled, sanded flat and spot primed.

Doorknob and fist-size holes

Cut square, backed or patched with a fitted piece, taped and feathered out.

Larger openings

Holes left after plumbing, electrical or a leak, cut back to framing and filled with new board.

Cracks and seams

Recurring cracks at corners of doors and windows re-taped rather than just caulked or filled.

Nail and screw pops

Pops reset with screws beside them and the old spot re-coated, so they stop coming back.

Corner bead

Dented or cracked outside corners replaced with new bead and finished.

Buyer's Guide

Patch, re-tape or replace the sheet

Size decides the method. A hole smaller than a quarter can be filled with lightweight spackle. Up to a few inches, a self-adhesive mesh patch or a cut piece of board with paper tape works. Anything larger should be cut back to the studs on either side, or backed with wood inside the wall, so the new piece is screwed to something solid. Patching a large hole without backing is how you end up with a soft spot that cracks again.

Mesh tape and paper tape both have a place. Mesh is fast for small patches, but it should be covered with a setting-type compound because it is weaker than paper and can crack along the edges under ordinary drying compound. Paper tape is stronger on flat seams and much better on inside corners. A crack that keeps reappearing at the corner of a door frame usually means the old tape failed, and it needs to be cut out and re-taped, not filled again.

Painting is where most repairs give themselves away. Compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding wall, so an unprimed patch flashes as a dull or shiny spot. The patch needs primer, then paint that matches the wall's sheen. If the wall paint is old or the color is unknown, painting the whole wall corner to corner usually looks better than trying to touch up one spot.

Gather them up into one visit

Joint compound has to dry between coats, so even one small patch usually means a few short visits. Doing five repairs takes about the same number of visits as doing one.

Walk the house before your estimate and note every hole, crack and nail pop you've been meaning to fix. We'll price them together and do them on the same schedule.

Drywall Repair: Frequently Asked Questions

Usually because the original tape at that joint has failed, or the crack was filled with compound alone. Cracks at the corners of doors and windows often follow seasonal movement in the framing. The fix is to cut out the loose tape, re-tape with paper and setting compound, and finish it out. Filling the crack again only hides it for a season.

Nails and screws back out as framing lumber dries and shifts, or when they weren't driven into the stud properly. It's common in ceilings and in newer homes. We drive a screw beside the pop to pull the board tight, set or remove the old fastener, and re-coat. Painting over a pop without securing the board means it will come back.

Yes, and it's one of the most common repairs we do. Once their work is finished and inspected, we square up the openings, add backing where needed, fit new board and finish it flat. Ask the other trade to keep openings as neat as they can. It makes the patch smaller.

Sometimes. If you have the original paint and the wall hasn't faded, a primed patch with a careful touch-up can disappear. More often, older paint has shifted in color or sheen, and the touch-up shows. Painting the full wall from corner to corner is the reliable way to hide a repair.

Yes. Dented or cracked metal corner bead on outside corners is cut out and replaced with new bead, then coated and feathered back into the wall. Where corners get hit often, like a hallway or stairwell, paper-faced bead holds up better and resists cracking at the edges.

Marcio scheduled a visit to my home and we went through the renovation I was looking to have done in our master bathroom. After providing us the final estimate we scheduled demo and his team arrived promptly to start their work. They did a good job covering the bedroom items to avoid dust which helped quite a bit. During construction Marcio kept me informed the entire time and we made a couple minor changes to the scope of work without any issues… Overall, Marcio was a great contractor to work with at a good price.
