Hanging the board is the easy part

Anyone can screw sheets of drywall to studs. What separates a good job from a bad one is everything after: seams planned so there are fewer of them, butt joints kept off the middle of a wall where possible, tape bedded tight, and enough coats of compound sanded flat that you can't find the seams when light hits the wall from the side.

We install drywall as part of kitchen and bathroom remodels, for additions and new rooms, and for basement finishing. Because we also paint, the wall gets primed and painted by the same people who finished it, and nobody blames the other trade if a seam shows.

That matters in Wakefield-area homes where a new wall meets an old one. Matching a new drywall wall to an existing plaster wall takes planning at the joint, because the two are rarely the same thickness and they move differently over time. We'll look at where the new work meets the old and talk it through at the estimate.

What's included in a drywall install

Board selection

Standard, moisture-resistant or fire-rated board chosen for each wall and ceiling, in the thickness the space calls for.

Hanging

Sheets laid out to minimize joints, screwed at proper spacing with heads set just below the surface without tearing the paper.

Corners and tape

Paper tape on flat seams and inside corners, metal or paper-faced bead on outside corners.

Finishing coats

Typically three coats of compound over seams and screws, feathered wide and sanded between coats.

Primer and paint

A full coat of drywall primer to even out the paper and compound, then finish paint if it's part of your job.

Buyer's Guide

Which board, which thickness, which finish

Half-inch board is the standard for most interior walls. Five-eighths inch is stiffer and better on ceilings, especially where framing is spaced wider, because it sags less over time. Type X five-eighths is fire-rated and is typically required on walls and ceilings between an attached garage and the living space. Your building inspector has the final word on what a rated assembly needs, so we confirm it on permitted work.

In bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements, moisture-resistant or mold-resistant board is the usual choice for walls and ceilings. It is not waterproof, though. Inside a shower or behind a tub surround, tile goes on cement board or a waterproofed backer, never on drywall of any kind. We see failed showers where green board was used as a tile backer, and the fix always means tearing it out.

Finish level is worth deciding on purpose. A level 4 finish, with tape and three coats sanded smooth, suits most walls with flat or eggshell paint. Where a long wall catches low sun from a window, or you want semi-gloss paint, a level 5 skim coat over the whole surface hides more. Inside a closet or behind cabinets, less finishing is fine, and there is no reason to pay for more than the space needs.

Before the drywall goes up

Once the walls are closed, anything inside them is expensive to reach. Before we hang, wiring and plumbing should be finished and inspected by the licensed trades, insulation in place, and blocking added for anything heavy you plan to mount.

Think about where the TV, grab bars, shelving or cabinets will go. A few minutes of blocking now saves cutting a hole later.

Drywall Installation: Frequently Asked Questions

Half-inch is standard for most interior walls. Five-eighths is better on ceilings because it resists sagging, and fire-rated Type X five-eighths is typically required between an attached garage and the house. Some homeowners also choose five-eighths on walls for a more solid feel and somewhat better sound control between rooms.

No. Moisture-resistant drywall handles humidity better than standard board, which makes it a good choice for bathroom walls outside the shower and for laundry rooms. It is not a tile backer for wet areas. Shower walls and tub surrounds need cement board or a waterproofed backer system behind the tile.

It means a thin skim coat of compound over the entire surface after the normal taping and finishing. It evens out the texture difference between paper and compound so the wall looks uniform under strong side lighting or glossy paint. It adds time and cost, so it's used where it shows, not everywhere.

Replacing drywall like for like as a repair often doesn't, but drywall that's part of a remodel, addition, basement finish or new wall usually falls under that project's building permit, and inspections may need to happen before walls are closed. Check with your local building department, and we'll talk through what applies at the estimate.

We can improve it. Mineral wool insulation in the wall cavity, five-eighths board, and acoustic sealant at the edges all reduce sound between rooms like a bedroom and a family room. True soundproofing needs special assemblies, but these steps make a noticeable difference for a modest added cost when the walls are open anyway.

Marcio scheduled a visit to my home and we went through the renovation I was looking to have done in our master bathroom. After providing us the final estimate we scheduled demo and his team arrived promptly to start their work. They did a good job covering the bedroom items to avoid dust which helped quite a bit. During construction Marcio kept me informed the entire time and we made a couple minor changes to the scope of work without any issues… Overall, Marcio was a great contractor to work with at a good price.
